Loud snoring, waking up gasping, morning headaches, and feeling tired no matter how long you sleep can all point to obstructive sleep apnea. It’s more than a nuisance. Untreated sleep apnea strains your heart and leaves you running on empty. At Siena Dental, we offer custom oral appliances that help keep your airway open, so you and your partner can sleep better.
What Is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
When you fall asleep, the muscles in your throat relax. In people with sleep apnea, the soft tissue collapses and blocks the airway, sometimes dozens or even hundreds of times a night. Each pause cuts off oxygen and pulls you out of deep sleep, even if you don’t remember waking up.
Common Signs
- Loud, frequent snoring
- Pauses in breathing that a partner notices
- Waking up choking or gasping
- Morning headaches or dry mouth
- Daytime sleepiness, trouble focusing, or irritability
How Oral Appliance Therapy Works
An oral appliance looks a lot like a sports mouthguard. It’s custom-made from impressions of your teeth and gently holds your lower jaw slightly forward while you sleep. That small change keeps the airway open so you can breathe normally through the night.
Oral Appliance or CPAP?
CPAP is effective, but many people find the mask, hose, and noise hard to live with. An oral appliance is:
- Small and quiet, with no mask or machine
- Easy to travel with
- Comfortable to wear once you adjust
- A good option for mild to moderate sleep apnea, or for patients who can’t tolerate CPAP
Getting Started
Sleep apnea is diagnosed with a sleep study. We work with a sleep medicine group that offers telemedicine assessments with a sleep physician, so you can get a diagnosis without an overnight stay in a sleep lab. If an oral appliance is right for you, we take impressions, fit your appliance, and adjust it at follow-up visits.
Making Treatment Affordable
Oral appliance therapy is usually billed to medical insurance, not dental insurance, and many PPO medical plans cover it. Our team will help you check your benefits before you start.

Sleep Apnea FAQs
-
Is snoring always sleep apnea?
No. Many people snore without having sleep apnea. A sleep study is the only way to know for sure. -
Can an oral appliance help with snoring alone?
Yes. The same appliance that treats mild sleep apnea often reduces or stops snoring. -
How long does it take to adjust?
Most people get used to their appliance within a week or two. Some notice mild jaw soreness at first, which usually fades. -
Will medical insurance cover it?
Many medical plans do when you have a sleep apnea diagnosis. We'll help you find out what your plan covers.
