When one tooth is missing, you shouldn’t have to compromise the healthy teeth around it. A single tooth implant replaces just what you lost: a titanium post takes the place of the root, and a custom crown takes the place of the tooth. Nothing else in your mouth has to change.
How a Single Tooth Implant Works
An implant has three parts. The post sits in your jawbone and fuses with it over a few months. A small connector, called an abutment, attaches to the post. The crown, made from porcelain or zirconia and shaded to match your teeth, attaches to the abutment.
Because the post acts like a root, it keeps the bone around it active and healthy. That’s something a bridge or partial denture can’t do.
Implant or Bridge?
A bridge fills a gap by anchoring a false tooth to the teeth on either side. Those teeth have to be filed down to hold crowns, even if they’re perfectly healthy. Here’s how the two compare:
- Your other teeth: An implant stands on its own. A bridge relies on the neighboring teeth.
- Your jawbone: An implant helps keep bone from shrinking under the gap. A bridge doesn’t.
- How long it lasts: A bridge often lasts 10 to 15 years. An implant can last 20 years or more.
- Cleaning: You brush and floss an implant like a natural tooth. A bridge needs special floss threaders.
A bridge can still be a good choice in some situations, and we’ll tell you honestly which one fits you.
Your Treatment at Siena Dental
Consultation
Your free consultation includes an exam and a 3D CBCT scan so your dentist can see the bone where the implant will go. You’ll leave with a written plan and cost estimate.
Extraction and Grafting, If Needed
If the damaged tooth is still in place, we remove it here. Sometimes the implant can go in the same day. If the bone needs support, we add a bone graft first.
Implant Placement
Your dentist places the post under local anesthesia, with sedation available if you’d like it. Most people are back to work the next day.
Your Final Crown
After the implant has fused with the bone, usually in three to six months, we take a digital impression and place your custom crown.

Single Tooth Implant FAQs
-
Will my implant look like a real tooth?
Yes. We match your crown's shape and shade to the teeth around it, so most people won't be able to tell. -
How long is recovery?
Most patients feel soreness for a few days and eat soft foods for about a week. Full healing under the gum takes a few months. -
What if I lost my tooth years ago?
You may need a bone graft to rebuild the area, which we can do in our office. Your 3D scan shows us how much bone you have. -
Does insurance cover a single implant?
Some plans cover part of it, often the crown. We'll check your benefits for you. Learn more about dental implant cost.
