A crown is a custom cap that covers a tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. It’s one of the most common ways to protect a tooth that’s cracked, worn, heavily filled, or treated with a root canal. At Siena Dental, we design and place crowns that fit comfortably and blend in with your smile.
When You Might Need a Crown
- A tooth with a large cavity or old filling that’s too big for another filling
- A cracked or broken tooth
- A back tooth after a root canal
- A severely worn tooth from grinding
- A discolored or misshapen tooth you want to improve
- To top a dental implant or anchor a bridge
Crown Materials
Porcelain
Porcelain crowns offer the most natural look and are ideal for front teeth. We match the shade to your neighboring teeth.
Zirconia
Zirconia is very strong and still tooth-colored, which makes it a great choice for back teeth that handle heavy chewing.
Gold
Gold crowns are extremely durable and gentle on opposing teeth. They’re a practical option for molars that aren’t visible when you smile.
Your dentist will recommend a material based on where the tooth is, how you bite, and how you’d like it to look.
Getting Your Crown
Visit 1
We numb the tooth, remove any decay, and shape the tooth so the crown fits over it. We then take a digital impression, with no messy trays, and place a temporary crown.
Visit 2
Once your permanent crown is ready, we remove the temporary, check the fit and color, adjust your bite, and bond the crown in place.
Caring for Your Temporary Crown
- Chew on the other side when you can.
- Avoid sticky or hard foods like caramel, gum, and nuts.
- Slide floss out to the side instead of pulling it up.
- Call us if your temporary comes loose.

Dental Crown FAQs
-
How long do crowns last?
Often 10 to 15 years or longer. Grinding, chewing ice, and skipping cleanings can shorten that. -
Does getting a crown hurt?
We numb the tooth first, so you shouldn't feel pain. Some sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal. -
Will my crown look natural?
Yes. Porcelain and zirconia crowns are shaded to match your teeth, so most people can't tell which tooth has a crown. -
Does insurance cover crowns?
Most PPO plans cover part of a crown when it's needed for the health of the tooth. We'll check your benefits for you. See our financial options.
