A dental implant needs solid bone to hold onto. When a tooth has been missing for a while, or gum disease or an injury has worn the bone down, there may not be enough left to support one. A bone graft rebuilds that foundation so an implant can go where you need it.
At Siena Dental, our dentists place bone grafts in the same office where they place and restore your implant, so your care stays in one place from start to finish.
Why the Jawbone Shrinks
Your jawbone stays strong because your tooth roots stimulate it every time you chew. When a tooth is lost, that stimulation stops, and the bone underneath slowly starts to shrink. Most of that loss happens in the first year. Gum disease, infections, and injuries to the mouth can also destroy bone.
Types of Bone Grafts We Offer
Socket Preservation
When we remove a tooth, we can place graft material in the empty socket right away. This helps keep the bone from collapsing, so it’s ready for an implant later. It’s one of the simplest ways to protect your options after a tooth extraction.
Ridge Augmentation
If the ridge of bone that held your teeth has become too thin or too short, we add graft material to rebuild its height and width.
Sinus Lift
In the upper back jaw, the sinus can sit too close to where an implant needs to go. A sinus lift gently raises the sinus floor and adds bone underneath.
Graft Materials
We use synthetic graft material and donor bone tissue, both of which are safe, widely used, and designed to act as a scaffold for your own bone to grow into. Over time, your body replaces the graft with new, natural bone. Your dentist will recommend the right material for your situation.
What to Expect
1. Consultation and 3D Scan
A 3D CBCT scan shows exactly how much bone you have and where. Your dentist explains whether you need a graft, what type, and how it fits into your implant timeline.
2. Placing the Graft
The area is fully numbed, and sedation is available. Your dentist places the graft material and closes the gum over it. Most grafts take under an hour.
3. Healing
Over the next few months, your body grows new bone into the graft. Small grafts, like socket preservation, may heal faster. You’ll have mild soreness for a few days.
4. Your Implant
Once the bone is ready, we place your dental implant. In some cases, a small graft and the implant can be placed in the same visit.

Bone Grafting FAQs
-
How do I know if I need a bone graft?
Your 3D scan tells us. If the bone is too thin, too short, or too soft to hold an implant securely, your dentist will recommend a graft. -
Does a bone graft hurt?
Most patients feel pressure but no pain during the procedure. Afterward, soreness and swelling usually improve within a few days and respond well to over-the-counter pain relievers. -
How long before I can get my implant?
It depends on the size of the graft. Many patients are ready in three to six months. Larger grafts or sinus lifts can take longer. -
Can I skip the graft and get an implant anyway?
Placing an implant in bone that can't support it raises the risk of failure. In some full-arch cases, All-on-4 implants can avoid grafting by using angled implants. Your dentist will go over every option. -
Does insurance cover bone grafting?
Some plans cover part of it. We'll check your benefits for you. See dental implant cost for more on what affects the total.
