If a tooth is throbbing, sensitive to heat, or swollen around the gum, the nerve inside may be infected. A root canal clears out that infection, stops the pain, and saves your natural tooth. At Siena Dental, our dentists perform root canals in our Leander office, and most patients say it feels a lot like getting a filling.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
- Lingering pain, especially when you chew or bite
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that stays after the food or drink is gone
- A darkened tooth
- Swollen or tender gums near one tooth
- A pimple-like bump on the gum
Sometimes an infected tooth doesn’t hurt at all and only shows up on an X-ray. If you’re in pain now, see our emergency dentist page or call us for a same-day visit.
How a Root Canal Works
Request Appointment1. Diagnosis
We examine the tooth and take digital X-rays, and a 3D CBCT scan when we need a closer look at the roots.
2. Numbing and Comfort
We fully numb the tooth. If you feel anxious, we offer sedation, from nitrous oxide to oral sedation.
3. Cleaning the Canals
Your dentist makes a small opening in the tooth, removes the infected pulp, and cleans and shapes the canals inside the roots.
4. Sealing the Tooth
The canals are filled and sealed to keep bacteria out, and a temporary filling closes the opening.
5. Protecting the Tooth
A tooth that’s had a root canal can become brittle, especially a back tooth. Most need a crown to protect them for the long term, which we also place here.
Why Save the Tooth?
Pulling the tooth is the other option, but a missing tooth can let neighboring teeth shift and the jawbone shrink. Replacing it later with an implant or bridge costs more than saving it now. When a tooth can be saved, we’ll recommend saving it.

Root Canal FAQs
-
Does a root canal hurt?
The procedure itself shouldn't hurt, because the tooth is fully numb. Most people feel relief afterward, since the infection causing the pain is gone. Some tenderness for a few days is normal. -
How long does it take?
Usually one visit of about 60 to 90 minutes. Some teeth with more roots or a severe infection need two visits. -
How long will my tooth last?
With a crown and good care, a tooth that's had a root canal can last the rest of your life. -
What if I wait?
The infection won't heal on its own. It can spread, cause an abscess, and damage the bone, and the tooth may no longer be savable. -
Does insurance cover root canals?
Most PPO plans cover part of a root canal. We'll check your benefits and explain your cost before we start. See our financial options.
