The toothpaste aisle has dozens of boxes promising whiter, stronger, healthier teeth. The good news: most people only need to check for one or two things. Here’s what matters and what’s mostly marketing.
The One Ingredient to Look For: Fluoride
Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps reverse the earliest stage of a cavity. It’s the most proven ingredient in toothpaste. For most adults and kids, a fluoride toothpaste is the right choice. Look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance, which means the product has been tested for safety and effectiveness.
For kids under 3, use a smear the size of a grain of rice. From ages 3 to 6, use a pea-sized amount.
Pick Extras Based on Your Needs
Sensitive Teeth: Potassium Nitrate or Stannous Fluoride
These ingredients calm the nerve signals or block the tiny channels that cause that zing from cold drinks. They take a couple of weeks of daily use to work. If sensitivity is new or limited to one tooth, have us check it, since it can be a sign of a cavity or crack.
Gum Health: Stannous Fluoride
Stannous fluoride also fights the bacteria that cause gum inflammation. It can be a good pick if your gums bleed when you brush.
Whitening: Mild Polishing Agents
Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains, but they don’t change the natural color of your teeth. For a real shade change, professional whitening works much faster.
Fluoride-Free Options: Nano-Hydroxyapatite
If you prefer to avoid fluoride, toothpastes with nano-hydroxyapatite are an option with growing research behind them. Talk with us first if you’re prone to cavities.
Ingredients Some People Should Skip
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): the foaming agent in many toothpastes. It’s safe, but it can irritate the mouth in people who get frequent canker sores.
- Very abrasive formulas: some charcoal and heavy-duty whitening pastes can wear down enamel over time, especially if you brush hard.
What Matters More Than the Tube
- Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush
- Floss or use a water flosser once a day
- Spit, don’t rinse, so the fluoride stays on your teeth longer
- Replace your toothbrush every three to four months
No toothpaste replaces a professional cleaning. Hardened tartar can only be removed at the dentist.
