It’s easy to put off the dentist when your teeth feel fine. But most dental problems don’t hurt until they’re well along. A checkup every six months is how you catch them while they’re still small, quick, and inexpensive to fix.
What We Look for at a Checkup
Early Cavities
A cavity caught early is a small tooth-colored filling. The same cavity left for a year or two can reach the nerve and need a root canal and crown.
Gum Disease
Bleeding when you brush is often the first sign of gum disease, and it’s easy to ignore. Caught early, it can usually be reversed with a professional cleaning and better habits at home. Left alone, it can lead to deeper gum treatment and eventually loose teeth.
Oral Cancer and Other Changes
Your dentist checks your tongue, cheeks, throat, and gums for any unusual sores, patches, or lumps. Most are harmless, but finding changes early matters.
Worn or Cracked Teeth
Grinding, old fillings, and cracks often show up at a checkup before they cause pain. Fixing them early can prevent a tooth from breaking.
What Happens at Your Visit
- A cleaning to remove plaque and hardened tartar that brushing can’t
- Digital X-rays when they’re due, which use less radiation than traditional film
- An exam of your teeth, gums, bite, and mouth
- A plan for anything that needs attention, explained in plain language
For kids, we may also recommend sealants, a thin coating on the back teeth that helps keep cavities from starting in the grooves. We see patients age 4 and up.
How Often Should You Come In?
Every six months works for most people. If you have gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain health conditions, we may suggest coming in more often.
Checkups Save Money
Most PPO plans cover preventive visits, often at little or no cost to you. Siena Dental accepts all PPO insurance plans. No insurance? Our in-house membership plan covers your routine care for a yearly fee, and new patients can start with a $49 exam.
