A wedding, graduation, reunion, or big interview means photos, and plenty of them. Professional whitening can brighten your smile in a single visit, but timing it right makes the difference. Here’s how to plan.
4 to 6 Weeks Before: Checkup and Cleaning
Start with a cleaning. It removes surface stains and tartar on its own, so your teeth may already look brighter. It also gives us a chance to spot cavities or gum problems, which should be treated before whitening so it’s comfortable.
If you have crowns, veneers, or fillings on your front teeth, tell us now. Whitening won’t change their color, so we’ll talk about how to keep everything matching.
1 to 2 Weeks Before: Whiten
This is the sweet spot. Siena Dental uses Zoom in-office whitening, which takes about an hour and brightens teeth several shades in one visit. Whitening a week or two ahead leaves time for any sensitivity to settle and for your color to even out.
Avoid whitening the day before your event. Some people have mild sensitivity for a day or two, and you want to feel your best.
Between Whitening and the Big Day
For the first 48 hours after whitening, your teeth pick up stains more easily. Try to skip or cut back on:
- Coffee and tea
- Red wine
- Dark sodas and sports drinks
- Berries, tomato sauce, and curry
- Tobacco
If you do have coffee, use a straw and rinse with water afterward.
On the Day
- Brush and floss before you head out
- Carry water and rinse after eating or drinking
- Keep a travel toothbrush or a few floss picks in your bag
Short on Time?
Because Zoom whitening is done in one visit, even a few days’ notice can work if your teeth and gums are healthy. If whitening alone won’t get the result you want, veneers or bonding may be worth discussing for the longer term.
