Clear aligners work the same way at any age: a series of custom trays that move your teeth a little at a time. But the experience looks different for a 14-year-old than for a 40-year-old. Here’s what to think about for each.
For Parents of Teens
Is My Teen Ready?
Aligners usually work best once most of the permanent teeth have come in, often around age 12 to 14. We’ll check at an exam.
Will They Actually Wear Them?
This is the biggest question. Aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Teen aligners often have small blue wear indicators that fade with use, so you and your dentist can see whether they’re being worn enough. A case for school and a simple routine, trays in right after lunch, for example, help a lot.
Sports and Band
Aligners come out for contact sports so your teen can wear a mouthguard, and many wind and brass players find them easier to play with than braces. Just put them back in afterward.
For Adults
It’s Not Too Late
Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and bone are healthy. Many adults come in because teeth have shifted since braces as a kid, or because crowding is making it hard to keep teeth clean.
Fitting Aligners Into Work Life
Most people won’t notice you’re wearing them, even in meetings or on video calls. You may have a slight lisp for the first few days. Plan to brush before putting your trays back in after meals, so keeping a travel toothbrush at work helps.
Gum Health Comes First
Adults are more likely to have some gum disease, and it needs to be under control before we move teeth. If you’re due, we’ll start with a cleaning and exam.
The Same for Everyone: Retainers
Teeth want to drift back after treatment, at any age. Wearing your retainer as directed is what keeps your new smile straight.
